Lucy walked into the house quietly just so she wouldn’t alarm Marianne. Emma and I were both grateful—Marianne’s house was beautiful, tucked in the outskirts of town, quiet and green and smelling like roses and warm bread. Emma worked longer shifts than I did. She was a nurse, and nights often swallowed her whole. I had a remote tech job, which meant I was home most of the time—sometimes alone with Marianne. Not that I minded. She was easy to talk to. Smart, graceful. Her laugh could shake the silence of the house like wind through old curtains. But it was how she looked at me that started to disturb me.

“I might’ve dressed a little plainly today and skipped the makeup, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to act like I’m invisible,” Marianne huffed. “That woman—Kandice’s mother, I don’t even remember her name.” “Sandra Peterson,” Grace murmured beside her. Marianne waved a hand dismissively. “Sandra. Whatever. She bumped into a box of red wine the driver was carrying and completely lost it. Started ranting about how we had no manners. I mean, really—who’s the one with no manners here?”

Suddenly Marianne spurred up, forcing the woman’s voice to halt, her eyes finding Marianne. Marianne, in a state of panic, swiftly approached Bella and hastily took back the plastic bag, expressing her apologies. She then abruptly turned and stormed away from the woman. Marianne's fear was evident as her face radiated with terror, causing her to lose concentration. Overwhelmed, she leaned against the wall, clutching her chest, while beads of sweat trickled down her skin. The air around her seemed to intensify the heat, creating a stifling sensation within her body.

Muted jazz played in the background, soft and slow, the kind that usually helped me focus. But today, my attention kept slipping. I’d reread the same paragraph three times. Typed and deleted the same sentence twice. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, unmoving. Then Marianne walked in. She was dressed elegantly, as always — a cream blouse tucked into tailored slacks, gold earrings catching the light, her hair swept into a low twist. She looked like she’d just stepped out of a magazine spread, not skipped a family golf outing. I glanced up. “Why didn’t you go with Grandpa and Dad today?”

Chapter Thirty As she was walking, she saw another car parked beside her. She ignored it and she continued to work. She was distracted by the sound of the car because it made it obvious that the person's inside needs her attention. Before she could talk, the person already came out from the car. “I am sorry, but I have been watching you, are you fine?” The person asked. “I am fine, thank you” Marianne managed to say. “Common, you aren't fine. Where are you going to by this time of the day, with a lot of bags”

Julianne smiled and said, “Be calm. You were the one regretting missing out on the fun things. You can as well make up for it by attending this and every other one.” “Well, this isn’t fun,” she said. “The only thing you get is topless boys being reckless with each other, yelling and sweats dripping from their bodies.” Julianne gave her a suspicious look. “What?” Marianne asked. “You talk like you’ve watched this particular one before.” “No,” Marianne denied but her flushed cheeks betrayed her. “You gave details.” “I told you I study people a lot,” Marianne rolled her eyes and continue walking. “That looks like a lot of studying to me,” Julianne said after her.

Christiana’s point of view “God, I’m already liking her.” The guy next to another table chuckled and said with an amusing smile. What the hell! Jesus. Just help me. What type of nuisance is this? Don’t they know how to behave? I guess they rarely know. I know this is pub but they ought to have some decency. Is this the way rich brats behave? I guess I am expecting too much from them. Probably, this is only the way to behave for them. They got no ethics and manners. At least, I expected chivalry from them for a woman.
