As soon as I set foot inside the house, I could feel the other maids’ stares lingering on my back, their whispers prickling at my skin. “So shameless,” I heard, the word loud enough for me to hear. But this wasn’t new. Not for me. I’d already learned to keep my head high, even as the world tried to push me down, so I ignored their looks and followed the maid to my sister’s bedroom. “Lady Ara—Rosalia, the surrogate has arrived,” the maid announced, making my fingers clench at my sides. She hadn’t said anything out of line, but hearing someone address me like that... It hit hard, reminding me that I was right back where I started.

Seraphina's POV She looked at me sideways and said "I've been answering questions I didn't want to answer for thirty years, I'm good at it by now" and I almost laughed and the sound surprised me because I hadn't laughed in months and it came out small and rusty but it came out. I helped Maren in the garden every morning. She showed me how to check the tomatoes for worms by turning the leaves over and looking at the undersides, and how to tell when the squash was ready by pressing your thumbnail into the skin and seeing if it left a mark.

Martha's face turned pale the moment the surveillance footage began playing. Gasps rippled through the hall. People clamped their hands over their mouths, their eyes widening in horror as they turned to look at Martha. Bosco's laughter vanished and his expression hardened into something emotionless and unyielding as he stared at Martha. "Tell me, how does a dead woman injure you so severely that you've struggled to conceive for years?" Tears streamed down Mom's face. She turned to Martha, eyes filled with terror, as if staring at a monster. "H-How could you do this to your sister?"

Spencer is with us when Susan rushes up glaring at us. "You got Sebastian to come after me, she growls, I'm not lying Maya is yours Ben I was only fucking you five years ago you fucking dick",Marie growls viciously. "Look here you slutbag, Marie growls at her, my mate is not a dick and from where I'm sitting you are acting fucking desperate and no man likes that. We are mate. The maids laid out the meal: platters of charred octopus and strange, purple-tinged sea plants. I looked down at the rubbery tentacles and felt my stomach turn. Rhidian caught my expression and let out a dry, short laugh. "Ironic, isn’t it?" I looked up at him, my brow furrowed. "You’d find that we Sirens are different from what you think," he said, picking up a fork. "We aren’t kin with the merfolk. We have no reservations about eating this." He took a long sip of his wine, looking more relaxed than he had at the docks.

She looked over in that direction and was horrified with what was going on: her friends were being pulled out to the surface! “NOOOOO!” Marina screamed by this sight. “Hey, did you hear that?” a male voice asked.
