The streets were empty, and nothing but ash floated around in the wind. Mary let out slow breaths as she quickly realized that she was on a building top somewhere in Mystic Meadow. A bolt of lightning flashed in the red sky, and Mary quickly looked up. As she brought her eyes back down, she met face-to-face with a dark, shadowy figure. The figure had the body of a female, but her face and features were hidden under a black silhouette. This female had a bright red smile that looked like a brush stroke with blood, and her eyes were also bright red. She held someone—a male—by the neck with her left hand and slowly tightened her grip on the person's neck, causing him to lose his breath.

A life spent locked away from the world I ruled. Outside, the mountains gave way to the first signs of civilization—rusted road signs, narrow switchbacks, the distant glow of the city bleeding into the sky far below. “You’re going to pass out if you keep breathing like that,” I said finally. Lying on the ground, still hurting from the punches and bloodied, is holding a gun. Smoke curls from the mouth. And in front of him, behind Bethany, Someone groans.
