Kendra sat in the library with the book, The Hobbit, opened on her lap. When Rex had first shown the room that was lined with books to her, she’d been both intimidated and overwhelmed. I had no time to even process anything. Cael crouched by the central table where a rough map of standard maze layouts had been carved into wood. “Listen carefully,” he said. “The maze changes every sixty seconds. Paths close and new ones open. Somewhere inside are three crest tokens. Each token returned to center earns points. Defensive constructs guard them.” “Constructs meaning?” I asked. “Stone wolves,” Jessie said. I stared at her “Wolves?” She smiled. “Big ones.” Roran, who rarely spoke, grunted. “Hit hard too.”

Instead, a tall maze of steel and vines stood at the center, stretching into the trees beyond. A trial of instinct and survival. The rules were simple. Find your way out before sundown. No weapons. No help. The catch? You weren’t alone in the maze. Mara touched my arm before I stepped forward. “This isn’t about speed. It’s about endurance.” I nodded, tightening my ponytail. “I’ve got both.” She smiled. “Then go show them what a rogue can do.” I entered the maze last. The second I stepped in, the shadows swallowed everything. The air was thicker here, laced with magic or memory—I couldn’t tell.

“I don’t have to.” And then the rune-wall behind them cracked one final time. The sound was deafening, like a mountain splitting open. The four reflections stood in the chamber now—Kael, Seris, Brann, Liora—each one a perfect, twisted echo of the real. And the wall yawned wider, shadows swirling, the promise of more behind them. Getting into the torture chamber was far easier than we’d anticipated. It was so easy, in fact, that we were on the alert for danger even more than normal. It took time for my eyes to adjust to the dim lighting. When I finally did and was able to move about without fear of bumping into something and bringing attention to our presence, I headed for the small cages along the back wall. There were six cages in all. Two were empty. I moved close enough to see the occupants in the other four. Only one was a human from my world. He was in the very last cage in the dank and darkest corner.

"What? Why are we wasting time? Guys?" Rashid heaved as he tapped his forefinger on the opened history book at a certain paragraph. It spoke about how the dungeons beneath the king's mansion were huge and divided into different rooms. Each passage led to a different room; and each room was further divided into several rooms. It was kind of like a maze. A wrong passage would take them to the wrong room and they might end up getting stuck in a room that's far away from where Hunter and Claire were held hostage. "Are we going to unwind the other passages then?" Levi's query was answered with a small nod of head. "Okay, let's do it quickly."

"Can you actually run, or are you going to be a problem?” "I can run." "You are already limping." "I said I can run." He turned left. I ran. The maze was three floors, connected by stairwells that were not marked on any visible map, so you either found them by moving or you died waiting. The walls were concrete panels on slow hydraulic tracks, moving inward at a rate that was almost imperceptible until suddenly it was not. A corridor that was eight feet wide became six feet, then four, and if you were still in it at two feet, the sensors registered you as eliminated, and the panels completed the job.
