“Just to be sure.” I hesitated, looking conflicted and reluctant. Then nodded. “Alright.” Inside, my pulse thundered. The doctor arrived within the hour. Middle-aged. Clean hands. Calm voice. Efficient eyes. He examined me carefully, asked measured questions, pressed where I told him it hurt. I answered honestly where I could, vaguely where I couldn’t. Stress, irregular meals, anxiety.
