I have to piss in a cup, take my blood pressure, and weight then the nurse takes us to a room. I'm told to undress and put on a pretty pink gown. No sooner have I changed is there a knock on a door across from the door I walked in. "Hello Ms. Thompson. I'm Doctor Blake Williams. I've been sent over all your medical records. I've got to say; yours is the most interesting medical history I've come across. If you wouldn't mind laying back for me we're going to do a quick exam then take a look at these two to see what they've been up to in there."

Neither Ximmena nor her father noticed. Miguel finished his call and came back inside. He glanced at the benches; two new faces were there now, both men. He didn’t know them. He sat down and waited, tapping his fingers on his knee. The smell of antiseptic hung in the air. In the examination room, the doctor greeted Ximmena’s father and asked him to sit. She checked his blood pressure, listened to his chest, and wrote notes. “You’re healing well,” she said. “But keep taking the medicine. Come back next week for another test.”

“Emilia, this is Natalia. She is going to be my assistance during your physical exam. Is it okay if she is in here with us?” I don’t answer her with words and nod my head. The girl looks familiar, but I can’t seem to place her. I can’t have known her from anywhere because I never got to leave my pack and even as a child, dad didn’t let me leave the pack very often. I forced a tight smile, nodding, though I couldn’t bring myself to answer. The doctor’s expression softened. “It’s clear you’re not very comfortable around blood. You don’t have to be brave about it with me.” I nodded weakly. There was a knock at the door, and a nurse stepped in, holding a file. She handed it to the doctor, who thanked her with a nod before flipping it open. The doctor held the report, his brows furrowed tightly. He said, "Mrs. Robinson, this is your health examination report." His seriousness made me instinctively think of something bad, could it be cancer? Considering my mother’s condition, it wasn’t impossible...

How could he have gotten her real medical records! The man looked at her with cold mockery, his expression disgusted. He spoke word by word, his clear voice reaching everyone's ears easily. The room had gone silent, everyone straining to hear. "According to the latest medical examination report provided by City Central Hospital, your kidney function is healthier than most people present." He paused, letting that sink in. "There is absolutely no disease requiring a kidney transplant. Not now, not ever." His voice hardened, becoming even colder. "Your so-called serious illness has been a complete lie from beginning to end!"

Sasha argued but I wasn't having it. “I don't want to leave their side even for a second, I can't.” I declined, although I was feeling weak, I didn't want to leave their side. I would bear the pains just to be with my family. The door creaked open again and the doctor entered to examine them. After a thorough examination, he said with a low and gentle voice. “Their results are still the same, there's no sign of improvement.” His voice seemed to suck the air out of the room, Henry and Sasha looked solemn too as they heard the doctor's words.

We step into a fancy examination room and I take a seat on the bed. “Does anything hurt?” I shake my head “May I?” – The doctor asks approaching me “Yes” – I say giving him permission to touch me and examine me. After what felt like hours of blood tests, x-ray, and a lot more exams the doctor tells me I am free to go. I walk back to the waiting room to find Joseph sitting next to Michael and two other men. “Hello” – I say taking a seat on the chair furthest away from them Joseph walks to me and kneels in front of me

Grant quietly stood nearby but neither man spoke. Nearly forty five minutes later, the examination room door finally opened. The attending physician stepped outside carrying a tablet. He smiled politely. "Mr. Miles." Kennedy immediately stood. "How is she? Can I see her?" The doctor nodded. "Of course." Kennedy entered immediately. Shannon sat on the examination bed swinging her feet lightly. She looked embarrassed more than anything else. "I told you." She smiled weakly. "I'm probably just stressed." Kennedy didn't answer. He looked directly at the doctor. "So? What did you find?"

I smiled then I turned the page, it was another story about me. Then it moved to Edward Hartley, the vice chairman. Several more entries followed. Moments from my childhood I had either forgotten completely or never known existed, then gradually the tone began to change. The first mention appeared almost casually. Doctor Mack wants additional tests. I told him he's worrying too much. He disagrees though. I turned to another page. The headaches have become irritating. Now my hand moved quickly to another page. Doctor Mack insists everything should be stable. I wish he would stop looking at me that way.
