I closed my eyes and heard sweet melodies coming from outside. I stood up and walked slowly, careful not to step on someone. I opened the door and walked into the hallway. The sound came from the main hall. It was Elijah playing the piano again. As I was approaching, I could recognize the song, an old one, but still beautiful to the heart. Someone Like You by Adele. I lied my back against the wall and kept watching him as he gently ran his fingers through the keyboard. It was very calm, and we were both in the same room, alone listening to the same melody. Melody's POV: Just when I thought that everything is fine now, it wasn't. Life had planned quite a lot bad turns for me. It all started when I realized that I had completely forgotten about Amelia. The desk is organized chaos, stacked reports, clipped charts, a half written note in Melody’s tight handwriting. Her handwriting. That detail keeps punching holes in my disbelief. I sit in the chair across from her, hands clasped together so hard my fingers ache. My elbow still has a fresh bandage from the blood draw, and the memory of the vial labeled WOLFSBANE sitting in my trunk makes my stomach feel permanently tilted. Melody moves like she’s made of purpose. She doesn’t fidget. She doesn’t hesitate. She collects a small glass, a jar of dried leaves, and a vial of amber liquid, ingredients for a plan.

Back then, when the pain got too big for a little girl's body to hold, my mind would just unhook the latch, step out the back door, and drift into this vast, endless dark. And then, drifting through the fog, I heard it. A soft voice humming a melody I didn't recognize from anywhere in the waking world. It was at the tip of my tongue but I couldn't place my finger on exactly what my brain wanted me to remember, it was so distant but yet so close. I began humming the melody aloud, trying desperately for some unknown reason for the memory to be triggered by the song but all that formed in my mind were words that I think were for the song. So like any other person who's running out of time, I sang it.
