She’d do anything for the ones she cares about. “Yoo-hoo, anybody home?” Cammy knocks her knuckles on my forehead. I slap her hand away and shoot her an annoyed look. Oh god, I did it again, didn’t I? Yeah, I have not gotten over the drifting-away-getting-lost-in-my-thoughts habit. “Did what again?” she asks with a confused look. Oh my god. Did I just say that out aloud? Great, now I’m voicing my thoughts without being aware of it. I’m on my way to insanity, I swear.

As another monster lunged for the kill, mouth wide and broken teeth bared, my magic opened up unbidden, uncontrollably. Power flooded me, rushing through in a whirlpool of memory and pain, a roar that filled me with a thousand freezing agonies, dragging me down into the pits of my every despair. Down into the deepest depth of my power. My magic connected me to the rain hammering from the sky and the blood pooling on the ground and the pulse in every vein of every creature within a mile. I could feel it. All of it. I felt the monsters, their pulses thick and jagged and starved.

He doesn't sound as irritable anymore, but I hear another voice in the background. "First of all, I am going to take her to dinner and say I'm sorry. Then I am going to make her mine, because there is one thing I have realized. I believe that she is the one and that's why I can't get her out of my mind." I hear muffled noises in the background again, "Hey, I have to let you go. That girl I was telling you about the other day, turned out to be a nympho and she has been running me ragged. Rain tapped gently against the railings. The cassette hissed softly between songs. “But I remember feeling less afraid when they were near.” Silence spread warmly through the apartment. No pity. No interruption. Just listening. Because some memories return like frightened animals. Too much noise makes them disappear again. I closed my eyes carefully. And there— buried beneath endless years of loneliness— a melody surfaced. Crooked. Half-forgotten. Soft humming drifting through darkness while shadows curled safely nearby. The first gentle thing I had remembered from before the Silence.

With shaky fingers, I fix them in my ears and reach for my cell phone to play the first song I could see. “Think about everything but this… get your mind out of this environment…” I whispered to myself as the solemn beat of an unknown but calming tune flooded my ears, hitting my eardrums. I added, “Think about Ayden, Zadie… please don't let this trap you again.” Since there was no one to talk me out of my head and dark vague memories, I helped myself. I had never thought about keeping the raindrops out of sight and its stormy sounds out of my ears would help me calm down. Perhaps out of sight was truly out of mind. At least it worked for me this time.

Everything was already so confusing, but now… now it felt like my world was unravelling in ways I couldn’t understand. Tears burned my eyes as frustration welled up inside me. Why was everyone hiding something from me? Why did I feel like a pawn in a game I didn’t even know the rules of? And why—why was I being treated like this, used, discarded, caged? A sob broke from my lips before I could stop it. Then, out of nowhere, a melody floated to the surface of my mind. Hmm hmm… My voice was barely a whisper as I started humming, the tune wrapping around me like a distant memory.
