Two chests were lifted up the side of the ship with massive effort, leaden with water and their contents, and placed upon the deck to drain. As I returned my eyes to the water, I saw a flick of blue and silver, and found myself looking down at a merman. He caught my eye and grinned his face distorted by the ripples of the waves. I followed the balustrade around to the rear of the ship as he swam that way, just below the surface, face up, holding my gaze. Once he was out of sight of the sailors, he rose from the waves.
