Mia could barely see what is ahead of her. The heavy rain is blurring her sight. She could see nothing except for the dark and damp trees nearby and the winding road which is getting muddier and more and more slippery. Rain was tapping steadily against the rusted tin roof overhead, making a dull, depressing sound that echoed through the dark building. Raine stepped up beside me, her hand reaching out to gently touch my forearm. Rain hammered against the windows outside, thunder rumbling low across the town while humans hurried through the streets clutching umbrellas like they weren’t one strong wind away from becoming airborne. He rushed to her and pulled her into a fierce hug. “That was brilliant,” he said. “You made it rain blood!” Rain laughed breathlessly, still shaken but glowing with adrenaline. “I call it Make it Rain.” Malcolm laughed harder. “I love it.” For a brief second, seeing her alive, fierce, and smiling lit something inside me.

The medicine was starting to make me drowsy, and since Owen didn't want to talk, I just let it overpower and carry me off to sleep. Rain beat on the windows of the chauffeured town-car, smearing the lines of Des Moines into sad gray smudges. We drove by Gray's Lake and the crab-apple forest, but the blossoms were long gone. The lake was blocked by cement barriers displaying signs that the park was closed due to flooding. Over the softly playing radio, I could hear a weather report for yet more rain and increasing flooding throughout the area.

I locked the door as soon as she had entered and I turned around to face her. “You.. you’re wet,” I said. “I’ve been calling you!” she exclaimed as if that explained why she was wet. “I got stuck in a taxi with flat tyres when the rain started pouring and I called you!” I strained my ears and for the first time, I heard the sound of rain. It had subsided already, but taking a good look at her soaked clothes, I could tell that the rain had been heavier a few minutes ago. “I’m sorry,” I muttered and sat down beside her. “I went on a date.”
