Isadora only wished Toni found equal excitement in her books and school supplies. By mid-September Isadora understood a new level of parenthood. Though Toni was young, her classmates were not. Her sister seemed to be hitting the tedious tween stage a lot faster than Lucian had. Hoping to get to know some of these new middle school players in her sister’s life, Isadora agreed to let Toni have a sleepover with three friends. She didn’t anticipate the level of privacy eleven and twelve-year-olds could demand.

All the boys at least had a little idea of such a decent girl she was who would never do them wrong. An entire week for the teenagers who newly graduated from junior high to senior high passed by in deciding which girl they wanted to try hitting on as every one of them wanted to have a girlfriend now. That was because they wanted to make the most of the coed years of their school life, which was very new to them.

“Our son has a pretty face too. I can almost see how many girls will fall for him, like in your case, when he grows up.” Nolan grabbed her hand and lifted his eyebrows. “I’m not worried about my son. I’m worried about my daughter. What if she runs into a j*rk in the future?” Maisie laughed. “You’re starting to worry about this?” “Of course.” Nolan stroked her cheek. “The period between the ages of 10 and 19 is adolescence. Our kids are almost 10 years old now, and it's time to teach them how to protect themselves, especially Daisie.”

But he’d not been there long. “Na. They look like human babies. They start shifting at about eight or nine years old. Then all hell breaks loose. So you see a ten-year-old or tween with an attitude. That’s the one you will need to watch.” Even in the dark Ian could tell Mario wasn’t joking. He’d love to have a beer with Mario and hear the story behind his long-suffering expression. “Teen hormones and shifting. The thought scares me, and I’ve never encountered it.”

“Uh, there’s a difference?” He seems more confused than when he walked in now. “Cause I’m just worried about not being able to answer all her questions.” “Well,” I think. “They’ll be showing that health class video soon. Most girls don’t actually hit puberty and get their periods until middle school. I don’t know how these nine-year-olds end up starting everything so young. But I was thirteen.” He widens his eyes. “So, she might not actually be hitting puberty yet?”

Kevin said. “But we are still fifteen. Mom said that we are allowed to have drinks at the age of eighteen.” Mark replied. “Let me ask you guys this question. Where are your parents now?” “Home?” “Then where are you now?” “Here in the Motel?” “So did you get what I mean?” “You mean we were right we shouldn’t drink because they were not here?” Kevin breathed out in the innocence of these kids. “Forget it. We’ll drink tonight, right buddy?” Kevin patted my chest. “And he will be paying for our beers tonight.”
