Chapter 1 POV: Liora The scream tore from my throat before I could stop it. Alpha Declan lay sprawled across the wooden floor of the meeting hall, his silver hair matted with blood. His eyes stared at nothing, wide and empty, while crimson pooled beneath him like a grotesque shadow. The smell hit me next, iron and death, so thick I could taste it. "No." My legs buckled. I crashed to my knees beside him, my hands reaching for his throat where the wound gaped open. "No, please, Alpha, please."

Death stood at the far end of the parking lot and it felt like he was looking into my soul. I wanted to curse him for taking her. She’d been innocent and I might as well have handed her that blade to end her life. Karani was in front of me now and I could see Malachi looking in the direction of where Death stood, but I knew he couldn’t see him. Nobody could see him, except for me. Death raised his two fingers in a salute and my whole body stiffened as he grinned at me and disappeared. The pressure inside my soul eased and my mother’s scent calmed me.

I whisper, gripping the handle of the door tightly. Brynn nods, her eyes wide. "Someone's up there." Ice floods me. Crap. "Go." Gregory pushes me and Brynn ahead of him, and we spill out the front door. It's too late, though. A blast of magic hits me in the back, and I fall right in the middle of the doorway. Pain shoots through my body as I hit the ground. I try to get up, but my limbs won't obey me. Brynn and Gregory are yelling, but their voices sound distant. Footsteps thud down the stairs, and I know I'm done for. I can't move, can't even turn my head to see who's coming.

Her words warmed my heart, and I knew exactly what she meant. “I understand, Mom. Meeting someone would be a nice side benefit in life but for now, I just want to spend the rest of my time with you. If fate sends someone to me, I won’t turn them away. “Speaking of which, Mom, I’ve noticed that Mr. James Cotton from next door visits often. Are you planning to start a new chapter in your life?” She hesitated and looked slightly embarrassed. “James’s not bad looking, but compared to Rourke, he does fall short.”

Terrified, she panicked, but Death took her away before she could escape. I was left alone, watching Nicholas slowly stand up and gaze at the blood-stained dagger in his hand. "Astrid, I've already sent someone to kill the man who killed you. I've also instructed people to keep sabotaging your parents' company until it goes bankrupt, and then slowly torture them.
