"If you don't get here, you can come collect my body..." Before I could finish, a sharp pain shot through my hand. The phone was kicked out of my grip, and it skidded across the floor. I watched the screen splinter, flash white, and then go completely dark. Almost at the same moment the phone died, the familiar agony slammed through my skull. Last time, that pain had gone on for hours before I finally gave up and died. I started seizing. I curled on the floor, jerking helplessly, stripped of any last shred of dignity.

Then nothing. Cassian opened it with shaking hands. When he saw the still frame they had frozen at the end, the last of the color left his face. Even through the blur, he knew the coat, the braid, the turn of her body. It was Lyra. Half an hour earlier she had still been standing in front of him, quiet and pale, telling him to go. Now she was dead? No. It was impossible. He shoved past Selene and ran. By the time he reached the cremation hall, he no longer looked like the composed alpha everyone knew. He looked like a wolf driven clean out of his mind.

Chapter 30: The Blood-Bond ​The iron gate groaned as it settled into place behind us, sealing the entrance to the Dead Zone. Here, the air didn't taste like the sterile oxygen of the hospital or the salty spray of the coast. It tasted like magic—thick, ancient, and heavy with the scent of ozone. The ruins of the First City rose around us like the skeletal remains of a titan, stone buildings intertwined with glowing violet vines that pulsed in time with my own heartbeat.

“Kai, listen to me. Tell your mother that I love her very much, always have. Tell Saga I’m so proud of her–” Death laughed, and we were back in the house. Kari was aiming the gun at the door where Kiran would step through. I saw myself standing there, trying to get her arm to move, but she was too strong for me and I watched in horror as the bullet hit Kiran between his eyes, and his body sagged to the floor. “No!” I yelled at him. Death laughed as he looked first at me, then at Kiran. Kiran nodded his head and took a deep breath.

My right hand is now blazing with fire, while my left fist is folded with rock. Letting out a great battle cry, I whack at one of the first men that Reed called "shadow black beings." I don't care whether they are Shadow Black or not. I don't care whether they can perform black magic like a necromancer or be more powerful than them. All I know is that I am ready to step into this sparkling portal, and no one can stop me.

My mother dropped the smile, reached over, and yanked hard at my shell's arm. "Stop playing dead. Get back and prep for the Water Trial this afternoon." She turned to leave, and at that moment a faint sound reached my ears. Click. It was the sound of wolf bones setting rigid, of muscle fibers beginning to contract. A death countdown that only a wandering soul can hear.
