Katie put her hand up and waved hello. “Hi Katie.” Mikey and I said in unison. “How old are you?” I asked in a kind tone. “I’m twelve.” She said proudly. “Are you excited for the fundraiser?” asked Mikey.

He clears his throat, and I feel myself crumbling, but Jessica takes my hand, squeezing it tightly as he speaks. “Mike Clody, known to most as Mikey, was quite the young man. He played high school football in this very town and was offered a full-ride scholarship to play college ball,” he pauses, his smile appearing, “But he didn’t want to leave his family or this town. He made roots here and a life. He was loved by so many and will be truly missed.” Mikey’s mom whimpers beside us, and her husband hugs her tightly. “I’m here,” Jessica whispers next to me. He was young, that was clear, but he was also really shy compared to the other guys I’d met in Killian’s crew so far. His cheeks reddened as he said, “Look, I have time to kill tonight before they get back, and I want to do something nice for my wife since I’m out late. I wanted to cook her something, maybe. She’s pregnant, so she gets hungry all the time.” I smiled. “And you want my help?”
