Good. “Be afraid. I’m coming for you,” I conveyed the message with my stare. Miles bounded against the wall with his powerful hind legs and launched himself through the air. He landed lightly on the balcony. The shooter threw his weapon at us and scrambled to get away. But there was no escape. With one might swipe of his front paws, Miles gutted the man. The look in the man’s eyes as he tried to stop his intestines from peeling out of his fatal wound didn’t give me pleasure. I took no joy in killing. But this time, they deserved it.

“Miles! Do you know how old this building is? It’s gonna fall!” He pretended not to hear him. He lifted himself onto his tennis shoes and hooked his other hand around the roof edge. The rotten wood bent down beneath his weight. Aiden covered his eyes. “God, you idiot, please don’t die.” Miles’s smile grew wider. With a leap of confidence, he threw his weight into his palms and pushed his torso over the roof. The wood snapped, but didn’t break. He gasped again, peaking between his fingers. But Miles let out a slow breath, legs dangling below him a good ten meters from the ground, and swung the rest of his body onto the roof.

The tone was hauntingly final, like a farewell. She called Rayna immediately. No answer. Panic surged. She threw on her coat and headed to her car, only to receive another call—this one from her contact at the New York Film Academy. "Ms. Morales," the voice said urgently, "a student’s threatening to jump from the twelfth floor. Her name is Rayna Vega." The name knocked the breath from Ava’s lungs. She sped to the campus, praying she wasn’t too late. But when she arrived, it was already over.

The survivors tried to shove the zombie back down, but there were too many—an entire wave right behind it. Panic broke loose. People scrambled and tripped over each other, trying to get away, but there was nowhere to run. Behind them was a locked metal door full of zombies, and beyond that was a deadly drop. They were trapped! The rooftop was overrun within minutes. Miles, desperate, grabbed a few people and shoved them in front of him as shields. He sprinted to the edge of the rooftop and activated his gift, making the ground below rise. His power wasn't usually strong, but under pressure, it surged, lifting a small mound of earth high enough for him to jump down.

"And now that you know, you're more dangerous to him than ever. He won't stop until you're dead or working for him." The door bursts open. Morrison. Gun drawn. Face white. "Everyone out. Now. Bomb threat. This building. Right now." He grabs my arm. Pulls me toward the door. "We need to evacuate." We run. Down hallways. Past offices. Officers shouting. Moving fast. We burst through the exit. Into the parking lot. The building behind us explodes. Fire. Heat. Debris. Sound like the world ending. I hit the ground. Ears ringing. Taste blood.

She stops and motions everyone to duck. “What is it?” Damien frowns. He cannot see anything ahead except for a few Black Jack members who seem to be on guard. But there is nothing there. “Shh!” Moira hushes him. There is a figure heading towards the guards and they recognize him instantly. “Morales?” Damien frowns. “What is he-” Morales steps ahead and suddenly disappears. Damien is stunned. Is this magic?

Morales was safe. Inside the building, Mrs Morales was tied to a chair, exactly like in the photos. Her face was bruised—both eyes swollen now, blood dried on her split lip, her clothes torn and dirty. But she was alive but barely conscious. And when she saw Annie, her good eye went wide with horror. "Annie," Mrs Morales rasped, her voice rough from crying. "Annie, no. You shouldn't have come. You should have—" "Shut up," one of the men standing behind her snapped, and Annie saw him for the first time—Tommy.

“With interference.” The roof lurched again, this time tilting toward the street. No more talking. We ran. The edge of the building fractured as we reached it, concrete splitting apart in geometric shards. The gap between rooftops was too wide for a normal jump. I didn’t hesitate. I grabbed Melissa’s hand. “Trust me.” She did. We leapt. For half a second there was no gravity at all. Just open air and the hum of distortion in my ears. Then gravity returned sideways.
