I gripped the marker tight and cleared my throat.
“Do you like tattoos?” I asked Mabel.
She turned her attention to me, her eyes curious. “I find them fascinating,” she said. “People can memorialize their favorite things, people, or precious moments right on their skin.”
She spoke about Tanisha’s tattoos; a bird leaving a cage for travel, a rose for her mom. I heard her say Tanisha’s tattoos were beautiful. My mood dropped. How could she say that? How could she look at another person, someone else, and find them beautiful? My hand squeezed the Sharpie tighter.
