Like she didn’t know how else to hold it. We spent most of the period writing in silence. She sketched absentmindedly in the margins of her paper, looping curls of ink, geometric patterns, tiny lines like constellations and sigils. Sigils I recognised. Rain used to draw the same ones on napkins, on the edges of textbooks, on the backs of her hands in pen when she thought no one was looking. It was not because she understood them, but because they were inside her long before she knew what they meant.

Mirabel opened her folder and carefully laid out her sketches. The designs are delicate yet daring–silver frameworks intertwined with natural elements: vines, dewdrops, small birds and leaves sculpted with glass and emerald.

I pick up one of the pencils Lucas carefully arranged and, without thinking, I start to sketch. Gently, I trace out long, curved tree trunks with roots spiraling upward instead of down, and leaves shaped like crescent moons.
