They were all pretty convincing. A big spiral-bound notebook made of drawing paper lay on the chair. I flipped through a few pages. Some had charcoal drawings made with angry looking strokes. Dark and rough, but still recognizable as fields and hills you’d find around here. Other pages had diagrams in pen with clusters of spidery notes. Prop guillotines and coffins with spring-loaded lids. But most of the pages had monsters. Some drawn, some cut from movie magazines and pasted in. Some were more Polaroids of James in makeup; others were ordinary pictures of people from advertisements or news stories. On those he’d painted open-throat wounds or gouged out eyes with pen.

She had no plans of leaving. She opened her bag and brought out a file containing the project she was working on. It was a total of ten drafts and three final sketches she had drawn within an approximate of two days. The first two drafts were pretty messy but she began achieving what her expected sketches from the third draft. She first presented two pictures that that given her inspiration to the woman. Me sitting on the porch steps staring at the sunset. Me asleep on Lucian’s chest.

I ask, she brings her eyes back to me, this time she searches my face and I do the same. She has baby blue eyes, thick eyebrows, freckles sprinkled on her little button nose and her pouty lips are red, not lipstick red but natural red. It's like meeting Snow White in the flesh. She hesitates at first but she extends the notebook to me, I notice that her hands are shaking a little but I pretend not to have noticed. I take the notebook, keeping my eyes on her. The drawing is actually a sketch of a tree, birds flying away from it. It looks more like a picture to be honest.

She is very talented. Mira walked into the room and saw how she was carried away by her work, Gabriella's hair was packed up and the hand sleeves of her top fell on her elbows, she had her glasses on, focusing on her sketch work, and the room was all littered up with papers and pencils of different colors and sizes and she didn't mind notice Mira come as she had an earbud on and was listening to cool music on her phone. Like they’d always been this way. Like Lisa had always been there arguing over syrup ratios and Katie had always been correcting Dennis’s table manners. Elara’s heart squeezed. “Oh, sweetheart…” Julian crouched down in front of her, gently taking the picture. “You made this for them?” Mira nodded hard, her eyes glistening. “They said they liked cupcakes and family and… and I wanted to make them one. But they left.”

Every single page held a group of wolves, some hurried sketches done apparently in a rush, as though he couldn't get the image from his mind and onto paper quick enough. Other sketches were more precise than she would have imagined—hulking, sharp-eyed, living in a manner that made it harder to breathe. She gazed down at Alexander, displaying the sketchbook, "You're a wolf fan, huh?"
