I decide to ignore Mariah's, and I open Mila’s text. Mila: Hey, I heard what happened. Are you okay? Me: Honestly, I don’t want to talk about it. Mila- I understand; just know I’m here for you if you ever need someone to talk to. Me: Thanks; I’m going to go to sleep. Goodnight. Mila- Goodnight. I plug my phone in and place it on my nightstand. I put my hands over my head and stared at the roof. I close my eyes and pray to the moon goddess that this was all a horrible nightmare.

It was the same number as the mystery man, and this time it was an encouraging text. "Hang in there. I'm working on getting you out of there safely," the text read. Cassie didn’t know if she was reading too much into an innocent message, but the tone felt oddly intimate. It was as if whoever was responsible for the text truly cared about her beyond her skills, it was like they genuinely wanted to help her out. The text was timely. It soothed her, and she stared at the text until it self-erased five minutes later. She knew it was a way to cover their tracks, but she would have loved to keep the text as a reminder that her situation was going to change soon, something to tide her over.

I brought out my phone from my backpack and I thought of calling Mom but I later decided against it. Suddenly, a strange breeze hit me and I almost stumbled. I then heard resounding laughter. I looked around me but saw no one. I've gotten to the desolate part of the street. I hastened my steps but it felt like I was not moving from the same spot. I glanced at my wrist that was beginning to get heavy. The luck band was seriously glowing. "What's wrong?" I thought. The laughter didn't stop but rather increased. "Mackenzie" I heard my name and I turned back. I saw a man smiling at me.
