My fading vision finally caught a glimpse of his face in the reflection of the hallway window. The monster himself. But that was somehow the least of my shock. Because a second later, another figure stepped out from the shadows of the adjacent room. “When are we killing them?” Mira purred. She casually stepped over Evelyn’s unconscious body, walked right up to the monster, wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed him deeply on the lips. My stomach violently revolted. “Soon, my sweet,” the monster replied, pulling back from her with a wicked, sickening grin. “Soon.”

“Do not allow yourselves to be fooled by what you see.” He pointed at me. “The woman standing before you is Calista, the daughter of Elder Homer. And she is a criminal.” The room stayed silent. Nobody cheered, agreed or even moved. Magnus was standing beside me and that was all the protection I needed. Jake cleared his throat, clearly uncomfortable that he was not receiving the reaction he expected. “Earlier today, this shiftless woman broke into my private room,” he continued. “When I realized she was not capable of becoming the future Luna of this pack, I made the difficult decision any responsible leader would make.”

Her mother was adamant about taking her to the doctor, but she assured her she was OK.

Miranda answered, "The opening ceremony for the Elgerson International Film Festival is tonight." Paul froze for a moment. Only then did he remember that apart from Mindy's studies in Luridge College, she had come to Elgerson to attend the film festival. Sure enough, Miranda replied, "My dad and I are here to watch my mom walk the red carpet. I've got to go. It's about to start!"

Roman had promised to pick me up at 8:30 pm, so I wanted to be ready before his arrival. I finished getting ready and then stared at myself in the mirror. I looked so pretty that it shocked me. I picked up the silver purse, put all my things inside, and then sat down to put on the silver heels. I finally buckled the strap after struggling for a while, then left my bedroom for the living room. Sarah had finished eating dinner and was watching one of her favorite cartoons while we waited for her babysitter to arrive.

“I promise…I promise I won’t go close to him again!” “Shut up!” Miranda snapped, her face twisting with a dark, almost manic glee. “Let me tell you something. I’m having fun making you suffer because you’re a terrible person. I will do anything I want to you, and no one—I mean no one—is going to save you.”

Just as she was about to push the door open, a nurse beat her to it, opening it wide. “Oh. Hello Miss Monk.” Miranda's ears perked. Even while sick, the old woman’s senses were still sharp. “Is that my prodigal granddaughter over there?” Victoria rolled her eyes playfully and stepped into the room. "Yes. I've arrived." She spread her arms out like she was taking a bow. "You can relax now." Miranda Monk was sitting up against her pillows with a crossword puzzle book open on her lap and reading glasses perched at the very end of her nose.
