I muttered. “Maybe,” she allowed. “But not for the reasons you think.” I frowned slightly, confusion cutting through the haze in my head. “What does that mean?” “It means,” she said, “you’re acting like the worst thing you did was get caught.” That hit harder than I expected. “That’s not….” I started, but the words fell apart before I could finish them. Because… maybe it wasn’t entirely wrong. She didn’t push. “You made mistakes,” she continued. “You hurt someone. You hurt yourself. And yes, you handled things badly.”

Complicated grown-up stuff.” “But why was everyone angry at you?” She looked up at me and her bottom lip jutted out, trembling, and I bit the inside of my cheek so hard I tasted blood. “Sometimes people make mistakes,” I said gently, peeling her shoes off one at a time. “And other people get upset about those mistakes.” “Was it a really bad mistake?” I pulled her pyjama top over her head and buttoned the front carefully, focusing on the small motion of my fingers because it kept me from falling apart. “Yes,” I admitted quietly. “It was.”

But now— that’s exactly who I am. And the most ironic part of all is that neither of them knows. They both have flaws. They both have pride. They both make mistakes like any other person. But neither of them deserves this. No one deserves to be treated like an option. Like a question waiting to be solved. I can’t use confusion as an excuse. I can’t hide behind emotional turmoil as a defense. I made a mistake. And worse than that— I knew it was a mistake while I was making it.

“Do I?” “Because we’ve made mistakes in the past,” I said slowly, watching her closely. “Things we regret. It's going to be hard for you to trust us if you know everything that we've done.” She tilted her head slightly, eyes still gentle. “We all make mistakes, don’t we? I don't think life would be so easy it's everyone were so perfect. It's scary to be perfect and it's okay to make mistakes. As long as the mistake doesn't take a person's life or completely ruin them, I think it can be forgiven.”
