The mood should be claustrophobic, even in vast spaces, because the true prison is the legacy itself.

but I found the family secret element a bit more… contained? For a real multi-generational chokehold, I'd point you toward 'The Thirteenth Tale' by Diane Setterfield. It's all about a reclusive author unspooling her twisted family history to a biographer, and the layers of truth, lies, and twins are so meticulously crafted. The atmosphere is less overt horror and more a deep, unsettling melancholy that seeps into you.

Another one that messed me up in the best way was 'The Family Plot' by Megan Collins. A family raised on true crime podcasts has to confront a murder within their own weird compound. It plays with the gothic tradition but through a super modern, almost satirical lens of our obsession with darkness. The legacy isn't just secrets; it's how trauma gets ritualized and passed down like a fucked-up heirloom.
