“Would you like to join a book club or something?” I stopped walking and turned to look at her. “A book club?” “Yeah,” she said, nodding. “There’s one I’m in. It’s actually really nice. Good people, good conversations. It might help you… reset a little.” I raised an eyebrow. “You? In a book club?” She gasped dramatically. “Wow. That’s rude.” I smiled faintly. “It’s not. I’m just surprised.” “It’s not boring, I promise,” she said. “And you might like it. It’ll give you something new to focus on.”

And pulled out a paperback like she was presenting a newborn. The cover showed a shirtless man with a wolf in the background. I stared at it with the kind of horror reserved for secondhand embarrassment. Bailey slapped it on the counter. “For book club.” I read the title and nearly choked on my tea. ALPHA MOON: CLAIMED BY DESTINY. “Bailey,” I said, voice strangled, “I can not read this.” Bailey’s grin turned feral. “You absolutely can. And you absolutely will.”

"You stop reading because it feels like work instead of escape." "Exactly," I said, relieved that he got it without me having to explain. "I keep rereading the same pages and realizing I don't remember anything I just read." He smiled. "That's why book club helps. Other people keep you accountable. I’m part of a book club actually that started out in January. It’s just a dozen people, and we read different genres every week. But it’s so nice, and it helps to keep me accountable because without it, I won’t even read anything."

"Only the first night of book club is at the store. We take turns rotating every week to people's houses. They took pity on us and let us do it together." He says, showing me his sheet of paper showing what week people signed up for. I have one as well, but I just folded it and shoved it into my book not realizing what it was. "Shit, so what does that even mean?" I ask and Everett shrugs.

Lumen asked. "Apart from working here, the book club is good." "Yeah? What are you currently reading?" "The book club usually has three books at a time we're reading through. One of Sonny's books, one personal development and one for entertainment. I've finished the first two. I'm on to The Hobbit now." "Oh yeah?" Max perked up. "I really liked that one as a kid. It took me longer to get into Lord of the Rings." For the first time, Aspen actually had a little life in her eyes. "Yeah? I've heard it gets really bogged down in description."

Me trying to rein in my monster, eating enough but not too much while Mel eats with me and no one pays too much extra attention. So far it's been working, even though Mel fears he's starving me.
