I had to believe they were doing it for a good reason. I walk further into the room and see a row of red leather books all along the back wall on shelves. I rip a book from the shelf, flipping through the pages; every spell in here is black magic. I grab another book and another. They are all full of black magic, words of evil, each book darker and darker. I flip to a page that says “removing souls, the patient must endure months of torture to separate the soul from the body.” I stare at the page in disbelief. Is this what they are doing down here?

I took the book up, and with the ravaging anger that lives within me towards this book, I tried throwing the book to my door. As the book was about to hit the door, it got itself suspended in the air. Looking at the book suspended in air, I started growing phobia in myself, my feet are not stable anymore as I know this is not a matter of gravitational force but a matter of dark souls that lives in the book. The book instead of hitting the door and fall on the floor, started moving toward me. My room is in the second stairs as my house is a two story building. Right behind me is the window and I have no idea of what to do, as am about to reach the window the way the book approach me.

“What the hell is going on here?” My rasping voice only accentuated the strange, forlorn silence of my home. Nothing made any sense. Nothing seemed or felt real. Hadn’t, really, since we’d discovered those two dead dogs and that altar in the clearing, and especially since yesterday morning . . . When I’d seen that damned book at The General Store. The book I’d apparently bought in a fugue state and then read multiple times without remembering anything. The book that . . . I opened my eyes, looked down and—feeling very little surprise—saw The King Wears Yellow sitting open before me on the den table.

She could destroy anything with a single scream of frustration. Walking along the shelves, my fingers run along the books when I see a book that seems to be calling to me. Moving towards it, I pick it up and turn the pages, just scanning the contents when the pages move on their own, stopping on a page. Reading the contents of the page, my beast snarls in my head. “Don’t you fucking dare do this Fen!” I shake my head with a sigh. Closing the book, it opens again to the page I was looking at.

They keep law books on the second floor mezzanine, which is potentially the darkest and creepiest area of this place. Once I get to the top of the stairs, I glance down at the piece of paper with the title of the book on. Legendary assassins and their downfall. The shelves are all sorted in alphabetical order, so I find L fast and then search through the plethora of books, looking for the one I need. The same creeping sensation that I’m being watched sweeps over me as I glance down onto the ground floor level toward the door, wondering if I wouldn’t have heard someone enter. “What are you looking for?”

And somewhere in the shadows of my quiet apartment, something very old… stirred. I finally summoned courage to slam the book shut with a sharp snap that echoed through my quiet apartment. My heart was racing, skin flushed hot despite the cool rain still pattering against the windows. That invisible presence lingered in the air like heavy incense — thick, masculine, and far too interested. I couldn’t explain it, but every instinct screamed that opening that book any further tonight would be dangerous. “No,” I whispered to the empty room. “Not tonight.”

His gaze wandered slowly across the space. He spotted the large table that had just been placed there. On the far side of the table, an assortment of strange documents lay in a messy pile, illuminated by the dim, yellow glow of a lamp. He walked over and picked up one of the books from the stack. Opening it, he was greeted by unfamiliar writing—symbols and letters that seemed to bleed with darkness. The sight made his skin crawl. He quickly shut the book, feeling the chill around him deepen.

Food did not taste like anything anymore, sleep would not come no matter how exhausted I was, and when it did, I’d wake up gasping, searching for him in the darkness. Something was breaking inside me. No, that’s not right. Something was already broken. I shoved the library door open and stepped inside, desperate. I had been here every night, pouring over books, old texts, even folklore sections I would have laughed at months ago. But now? I’m not laughing. I’m tearing through pages, flipping between stories about werewolves, packs, bonds, rituals, anything that could explain what was happening to me. And the more I read, the more horrifyingly clear it became.

My mouth opened in silent panic, my hands flailing, scratching at my throat, my chest, the sheets. Goosebumps flared on my skin, I could feel someone was here. Someone was killing me. There was a weight pressing against my chest, like hands I couldn’t see were holding me down, stealing every breath. My vision blurred. Stars danced at the edge of my sight. I thrashed, heart hammering, and my eyes landed on the book open on the desk. It was glowing again.
