For a heartbeat, silence hung. Then Killian moved faster than I could blink, his fist driving into Varrick’s gut, forcing the air from his lungs in a violent wheeze.
“You lying bastard,” Killian hissed, seizing Varrick by the collar. “The Madame is dead.” He slammed him back against the chair, the metal rattling against the floor. “You think you can throw ghost stories at us and crawl away?”
Varrick coughed, sputtering, but that grin still clung to his face, blood-stained now. “Dead… doesn’t always mean gone.”
