At Amber's signal, the men next to us hoisted both me and Tara up. The salty sea breeze hit me in the face, and the sharp smell of ocean water churned my stomach. However, nothing compared to the screaming in my ears. Before I could even draw a breath, Ethan had already made his choice. At that moment, everything went silent. Amber instinctively turned to look at me. My vision flickered and spots of black clouded my sight, but I did not know why.

My legs felt like jelly as I stumbled towards the door, the pain on my back still evident cause of the way I had hit the wall. I could taste the coppery taste of blood in my mouth. There was just too much blood, and I felt nauseated. I rushed to the door, shoved the key into the keypad, and prayed it worked as I twisted the key. The lock clicked, and I almost cried from relief. I pulled the door open and stepped into a narrow hallway. There were three doors and three hallways stretched in front of me like a maze. I didn’t have time to think. I rushed to the first one, twisting the knob and pushing it open.

Lucius and his friends tried to resist, but they were powerless against the strength of the Royal Guards. Alex was horrified to see what happened next. Lucius and his friends were led into a dark and dank room. They were seated on an iron chair covered with wires and needles. Their hands and feet were chained so that they could not move. Then they were made to drink a red liquid that smelt of fish. Somehow this seemed to relate to what Alex had read in Damian's book, so no matter where the belief came from, Alex was sure that the drink given to Lucius and his friends was vampire blood.

Cloaked in black, their face hidden, but powerrolled from them in waves so thick it pressed the air from Maya’s lungs. Even Damien stiffened, his wolf bristling, and Felix took a cautious step forward. The figure lifted their head, just enough for a glimpse of glowing golden eyes. Not wolf. Not vampire. Not siren. Something else. Something ancient. “You carry the blood of all three,” the figure said, their voice carrying easily over the ruined cliffside. “But only one side will survive when the time comes. Choose wisely, Maya… for the end begins with you.”

My vision began to go dark around the edges, tiny black spots danced in front of my eyes. The hot pain in my broken shoulder screamed, tempting me to just give up and let the darkness take me. But then I looked down at the mud and blood on my right hand. I thought about my Dad. I thought about the bait shop burning to the ground. The silver light inside my blood did not wait for an invitation this time. It exploded out of my pores in a blinding shockwave of pure lunar fire.

Powerful shockwaves sent mud flying everywhere. “AAAAH!” All seven men coughed up mouthfuls of blood, struck down by the backlash of their own runaway power. They were hurled backward together with their weapons. One bone fracture rang out after another as they crashed heavily into the safety barrier. The seven fighters collapsed motionless in the mire, covered in filth, unable to rise again. Mud splattered down from the air. Eira remained standing steadily on the stone slab, not a single speck of mud staining her black outfit.

The air in the maintenance tunnels beneath the Cradle didn’t just smell like damp earth and electrical grease; it tasted like copper. It was the taste of a looming storm, the metallic tang that precedes a lightning strike. I knelt in the shadows of the primary junction, my back pressed against a cooling pipe that thrummed with a rhythmic, mechanical heartbeat. I crawled on my belly, dragging myself directly between the beast's thick, trunk-like legs. The mud was freezing and slick against my bare skin, but it helped me slide easily beneath its massive, clumsy stride. The Blade-Stalker roared. its heavy boots stomped wildly in the deep mud, splashing black water everywhere as it struggled in the thick cloud of gray dust.
