Mist
I said, and pushed my chair back.
“No! There’s dessert,” he said, and jumped up from his seat.
“You know I don’t eat dessert,” I said, and stood up as well.
“You can have coffee while we have dessert,” he yelled from the kitchen, and Kiran gave me a look so I sat back down. I had managed to get through dinner without once looking at Adelie.
“I’ll start clearing the table,” Adelie said, and stood up. She leaned toward me to get my plate, and I held my breath as she picked it up. She smelled like wild orchids, and I looked out through the sliding doors, into the dark garden beyond.
