They were just so yummy and fulfilling and...and amazing. I devoured them like potato chips, damning any sleepless-night consequences that might follow. So basically, I was pretty much determined to finish this entire book tonight.

A whole section of contemporary romance—Mirabel’s doing, mostly. She’d started collecting them in high school, said they were “escapist but smart.” I’d never read them. Too many happy endings. Too much hope wrapped in pretty words. I pulled one down at random. Dark cover, brooding man in a suit, and title written in gold foil: Claimed by the Billionaire. I snorted softly, then slid it back.

Most of them were what I expected—books on strategy, history, a few on Italian mafia politics. And then, tucked on the bottom shelf, almost hidden— "You weren't kidding about these?" I pulled one out, raising an eyebrow. "Really?" "Put that back." "The Duke's Dangerous Desire," I read aloud, grinning. "A Rake's Redemption. The Highlander's Captive Bride—" "Jameson." Her voice was sharp, but I could hear the embarrassment underneath. "Put them back." "I'm not judging," I said, turning to face her. "I'm just surprised. You kill people for a living, but you read romance novels?"

He turned to answer something another person said, and she was left reeling a bit. Get it together, girl. This high school crush needed to go away. Maybe she should take a break from all the romance novels. The idea made a bit of her wither. Romance novels had gotten her through her divorce. They gave her hope for a better future. She got to escape her sad reality with each turn of the page. But Benjamin wasn't going to be like a character in a book. He was a real man with flaws and all. She'd do well to remember that her last fairy tale ending hadn't worked out so great for her.

I figured you always see women sitting by pools, relaxing and reading one. Maybe that's what I need?" "You seriously read one?" she asked. "I read...a dozen? They gave me too much anxiety. Too much will-they-won't-they, back-and-forth business. Too personal, too high stakes, too real for me to actually relax and read."
