It wasn’t physical—it was musical. The melody of the world stuttered, as if two tones had struck at once and refused to resolve. And then she heard it—a hum beneath the harmony, low and wrong. An Echo stepped from the shadows of the valley. Unlike the others, its body was jagged, fragmented, edges flickering like broken glass. I swallow down a throat-full of bile. The first note cuts the silence, and my nerves fall away. I am transported out of the concert hall, beyond the city. The forest stretches about me. We join the painting of sound, one at a time, setting the sun, calling the pack out into the falling dusk.

But instead of anger, he chuckled–a rumbling sound that vibrated through his chest. His brows arched and amusement danced in his stormy eyes. “Did you just hit me, Kitten?” Heat flooded my cheeks and I frantically shook my head. My fingers curled against the sheets before I lifted them, spelling out a single word in the air. M.U.T.E His amusement faded into something more serious and he stared at me long and hard as if scrutinizing me. Then slowly, he nodded. “Not dumb then. I will call you mute.” his voice was quiet, but the acknowledgement made my throat seize.

I bowed my head and waited for whatever he was going to tell me. “Don't get your hopes up, mute. Put yourself together because I know exactly what's going on in your mind right now and trust me when I say that's never going to happen,” He frowned and I sighed. My hopes were dashed again. “Since you're mute, I'm not really going to waste my time with you. The only thing I'm grateful to the moon goddess for is that you can hear me and so, I wouldn't have to stress myself while talking to you today,” He paused and moved closer than bent to look into my eyes. “You're the only one who isn't affected by the kind of power I have, and I think it's because we're mates,” I facepalmed.

Focus Calvin, come on, you are certainly not checking a mute girl out. Only God knows who than man is and why he wanted to kill her. She shivers in fear as fresh tears roll down her eyes. I give my guards a sign to leave as I walk up to her. I don't even know how to communicate with her since she's mute, I give her a reassuring smile as I try to relax her with it. To my surprise, she hugs me tight crying into my shoulders. Oh lord Jesus, I'm not used to this. What am I supposed to do? Hold her back? I hear her sobs, she holds me more tight, not even letting go.
