Maridelle’s wine is almost drained, but happiness told her to participate. “We will see such promising future of the love that gets stronger the second time around,” Alpha Lachlan ecstatically announced. Enough with the personal details and more working. "The Alpha is from a well respected and rather large pack up north. They allied with Father little over a month ago. He is unmated and maybe three years older than you are." Sophie informed me steadily. As it turned out, I was the only one who hadn't done anything of use regarding our new prisoner. Even Sophie knew more than I had. What an odd feeling, to not be of use. I nodded in her direction.

Wait, what? Before I knew anything, I was in my wedding dress, and standing in front of me was the alpha of Silver river pack, Alpha Curtis, and right now he was looking at me with hate and disgust. Hey! Don’t look at me like that! It’s not like I wanted to do this. I rolled my eyes and apparently he saw that because right now the look on his face was added a bit of anger and shock. He added in a serious voice. My stomach turned. I was going to be late for my first class if he kept holding me up. He had been going on and on about how I needed to keep my grades up, threatening to pull me from the captain position on the hockey team so I could focus squarely on school. It was infuriating. I had already skipped a year of senior school when he insisted I go away for intense Alpha training when I turned eighteen last year. Now, I had to finish my senior year and graduate because my time would be gone once I took over the pack.

The despondency of the city was starting to feel trapped and suppressed within my own chest. "You look unwell," Ronan said, his voice surprisingly soft. He didn't offer a gentlemanly hand—that wasn't our way—but he stood close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his body. "I’m just tired, Alpha," I admitted. "It’s been a long moon." I hear Alice whisper something, but I can’t quite pick up on her words. “She’ll be fine, Alice; go back to Connor now and knock off for the night.” Alpha Hunter is speaking to her so softly, I can almost trick myself into thinking he’s a nice person; that's how Alphas work, though. They draw you in with a false sense of security and then they turn into a monster; it's what happened with Alpha Jacob and it's what will eventually happen with Alpha Hunter. Sure, he’s caring for me now but I give it only a matter of time before he’s slamming me into a wall so he can get past me or he’s making me stand in the corner of the room while everyone eats and I wait for the scraps.

“What are you talking about?” I leaned in, lowering my voice even though it was just us. “She’s using you. She doesn’t care about hockey boy Ryder. She cares about the name. The connection. The leverage. She’s Alpha Reed’s daughter and she's been raised on power plays and manipulation. And you? You’re just a pawn.” I talked as I hit my finger on his chest making him swallow every word that came out of my mouth. “Stop,” he snapped, but his voice cracked.
