Death Bliss
My hand finds the wall to my right, the stone rough and cool under my palm, and I wait for my eyes to adjust.
They do not adjust. There is no light to adjust to. The transom window flashes once, twice, the lightning painting the corridor in a quick electric blue that shows me the length of empty stone ahead and then vanishes, leaving a darkness that feels deeper than before.
I hear the footsteps then.
