THE SHADOW BRIDE
I step inside, the air thick with dust and the scent of old paper.
The shelves are packed with books—hardcovers, leather-bound, yellowing with age—and the walls are plastered with strange symbols I can’t even begin to understand. In the back, a small table is covered with candles, crystals, and something that looks like a human jawbone. A woman is sitting at the table, humming softly to herself, her long gray hair falling in tangled waves around her shoulders. She’s wearing a faded shawl that matches the atmosphere of the room—worn but not yet decayed.
She looks up when I step forward. Her eyes are sharp, but there’s something familiar about them. The same kind of knowing I saw in Ruth’s eye
