Midway through the night, a guard approached Morris, leaning close to whisper something in his ear.
I watched Morris’s expression change, surprise first, then disbelief, and finally something dangerously close to delight.
He straightened, lifted his goblet high, and laughed.
“Well,” he announced loudly, drawing attention from the room, “it seems the night has given us yet another gift.”
The room quieted.
“Roland of the Jordan pack is dead,” Morris declared. “The moon goddess has finally claimed his life.”
A cheer erupted.
Some shouted in triumph. Others raised their glasses higher. Someone began clapping, and the sound spread like wildfire.
