There’s this thing I’ve noticed browsing online: a title that makes you pause and click is usually one that sets up a clear promise or a weirdly specific feeling. It doesn't have to be poetic. Take 'The Midnight Library'—it tells you there's a library and it's midnight, so you know you're in for something magical and maybe a bit wistful. The trick isn't about stuffing keywords in, but giving readers a handle on the genre and mood right away. I'm more likely to pick up something called 'A Psalm for the Wild-Built' than a vague, one-word title because I get a sense of the texture.

My own rule of thumb is to read the title out loud. If it sounds clunky or forgettable when you say it to a friend, it probably is. The best ones linger in your head and spark a question you want the book itself to answer. Sometimes the most effective title is just the main character's unusual name, but only if that name carries a whole vibe on its own.

The name 'Fahrenheit 451' was a total fluke, but look at how it stuck. Most of my time goes into hunting for titles that feel like they've existed for years. I treat it like a riddle the book solves for you later. Once you know why 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' is perfect, you can't imagine anything else.

A friend told me to think about the book's center. What's the question you're asking, or the texture of the world? My current draft has a working title I hate; it's too literal. The real title should be a little haunted, you know? Something that sits in your head before you've even read page one.

Mood boards help. I pull words from poems, old technical manuals, misheard lyrics. The right name isn't usually clever. It's a small, solid object you can hold in your mind. If it feels like it's always been there, that's the one.

Working titles are safety nets. Let them be awful. The final name will come when the book knows what it is, sometimes from a throwaway line in chapter seven that just clicks.
