Marcus was winning the war of words, and the board was starting to listen. I sat in my office late into the evening, the city lights reflecting off the dark surface of my desk. I had spent four hours on back-to-back calls with nervous investors. They didn't care about the truth anymore. They cared about the stock price, which was fluttering like a wounded bird. "They want a town hall," I said, my voice sounding raspy to my own ears. "The major shareholders. They want me to stand in front of them and prove I’m not losing my mind."

Lira said quietly beside me. "Do not get comfortable" I said. "Greenwall was always friendly. The harder towns come later." We held a gathering in the town square that afternoon. I stood on a wooden platform that the townspeople had set up and I spoke about what we had built over the past two years. The new laws. The Human Quarter. The council with both humans and beasts. I kept it simple and direct because people respond to simple and direct better than to speeches.

He was well known for his contribution to Bluebridge and the community, but to be elected as Mayor would be a major leap. Literally, everyone in town gathered at the Town Hall for the announcement. Even though the hall can only accommodate about 100 people, everyone else scattered outside the building in the bazaar area, the tents for dining areas, dancing, raffles, and other activities for the event. It was the first time Charlene ever attended an event like that. She was seated in the front row alongside her mom and important town's people. The Mayor delivered a speech with praises for Bill Ludlow because he was the number one supporter of the new candidate as his tenure will soon expire.

Almost all town halls themselves were the exact same design, and so the Ravens learned to spot them on sight. Eva supposed it was the best performing design. Or at the very least, the default blueprint that was good enough so no-one bothered to modify it. The sounds of shouting and arguing grew louder and louder the closer they approached the center square. And when they arrived, they saw throngs of people arguing amongst each other. Mostly, it seemed like colonists and Federation marines were debating with each other. Heatedly. And everyone was armed. Though it wasn’t an all-out screaming match, Eva could tell that tensions were high. If there was enough of a provocation, it was clear thin

It would be as if I have failed and disappointed my parents. The rest of the journey is in silence. When we reach the town, we notice that everyone seems to be walking in a particular direction. It’s the direction of The Court House. The Court House is where the leaders make announcements to the people. It is also used by the council to judge among the people and leaders. “This town is beautiful.” Jack says and I look to him. “Yeah, it is. The huts here are more fancier and grander.” I inform him and his face scrunches up in confusion.

"That was so brave, sweetheart. I know it’s hard, but we need to try one more time so it’s perfect. For me?" Maya took a shaky breath, clutched her rabbit, and nodded. "One more time, Mama." The Town Hall started at 9:03 PM because two of the rogue Alphas couldn't figure out how to unmute themselves and a third had apparently joined from a moving vehicle and kept cutting out every time he went under a bridge. Xander waited. He was good at waiting. When everyone was finally present—twenty-six of the twenty-eight, which he'd take—he kept it short.

“He can arrange it with the governor to have the whole town hall bugged.” We remain, perched in the shadows under the window, for about an hour, but we would be better off learning to speak cricket if we want to gain any sort of information. I am seriously at the point of losing my mind with boredom, when we suddenly hear the scraping of chairs, followed shortly thereafter by the lights inside the town hall turning out. We quickly, and silently, make our way closer to the front of the building, staying in the shadows and on the side of the building away from the parking lot, so we can observe the men’s exit without being observed ourselves.

Usually, Ashton would have said taken the piss asking if I was excited to see Spencer again but given the circumstances he with held those comments for a change. Entering the town hall just before 1pm it was good to see that it was already full. It meant that I could jump straight into the announcements. “Good afternoon everyone, before I start I would like to thank everyone for their help with the recent unfortunate events that have transpired over the last few days. I am forever in awe of your support and selflessness.” A few heads nodded, followed by cheers of the younger crowd.

He was glad to have his land back, and in many ways, he was happy to be custodian of the mountain property, although he'd just as soon the townsfolk didn't know about that part of it. All too soon he pulled up in front of the diner and shifted the truck into park. McFall was too small to have a proper city hall. There were offices for the mayor and the handful of council members, but if there was to be a public meeting of any size, it was held in the diner, which was closed for dinner anyway, so it made the perfect meeting hall.

“We can’t let them destroy this place. It’s not just a forest; it’s a part of our community’s identity.” Finally, the day of the town hall meeting arrived. Jace, Mia, Elara, and Leo stood outside the town hall, clutching their notes and flyers, their hearts racing. A crowd of concerned citizens gathered, and Jace felt a sense of solidarity among them. “Remember, we’re here to speak for the woods,” Elara said, her voice calm but firm. “We need to show them that this matters.” As they entered the meeting, the atmosphere was tense.
