I knew it’s where he and that fucking bastard Rokurō would be. Their guards scrambled, trying to stop me. I narrowed my eyes before bringing my Kitsune mask to my face. Fear clouded their features at the sight of my mask. They knew what it meant. This wasn’t me, Hatake Yūri, heir of the clan, coming after their boss and second. No, this was Kitsune, a blood-thirsty fox spirit. “Stand down or perish.” I warned, unsheathing my blade ready.

“Like wind clawing through bone. It doesn’t speak plain to me, but it wants. That much I feel.” Maxim finally looked at her. “If Ruby has given herself to it…” “Then she’ll burn until nothing’s left.” Zara’s voice trembled, not from fear, but from rage. “And the Hollow will wear her crown like a mask.” She stepped closer, her hand brushing his arm, grounding him. “You can’t let the Beast answer it, Maxim. Promise me that. The Hollow feeds on hunger too.” He caught her hand, rough against soft, and held it tight. “I promise to fight it. Even if fighting means chaining myself again.”

He turned to me and this time he looked straight in my eyes and he continues, “I will try and come back here to see you. But if I can’t and you can recognize me without my mask when we meet once again, then I won’t hesitate to be yours forever. This I promise.” I became dumbfounded at the moment and couldn’t speak a word but just look into his sparkling eyes. He blinked and cleared his throat before looking away, he made his way out of the room without looking back. My heart that was accelerating at the moment stopped the instant he closed the door vanishing from my sight.

The intensity of the moment was overwhelming. Feeling the mask over my face seemed to release something inside me, something wild and uncontrollable, as if that piece of black satin was the key to a side of me that I had hidden for so long. She cut cleanly through the thing’s chest. It dissolved into shadow mid-fall. The sentry was already gone. Her jaw clenched as she looked up at Ragnar. “It’s in the walls.” He nodded once. “And it will keep coming until it finds the right mask.” They cleared every hall after that, posting warriors at every stairwell, locking every unused room. But the Hollow was clever it didn’t come through doors.
