However, I saw something that made my heart skip a beat as I turned to head for the bed. There was a little piece of paper with a note written on it on my bedside table. Even though I did not recognize the handwriting, the message chilled me: "At midnight, meet me in the ancient oak forest. Come alone." I felt a surge of fear mixed with curiosity. What did they want from me, and who could have written this note? I was standing there pondering my options when I heard a slight scratching noise coming from the window. I turned to see a single word scrawled on a tiny piece of paper that was adhered to the glass:

“Sorry. I’m just so glad to see you.” “Yeah, I can tell,” Nathan says with a wince, rubbing his shoulder. “What are you doing here? How did you even get here? Your base is all the way over there.” “I used the Cloak of Invisibility. Not Harry’s but Naruto’s.” Kate does a double take. “You watch Naruto, too?” “Duh. And…” Nathan digs into one of the cargo pockets of his lower fatigues. “Ta-da!” he says, revealing two arm bands, both of them red. Kate’s eyes bulge.

“This is just… accountability.” “You’re signing what you wrote,” the composite voice said quietly. “Owning it. That’s all.” “That’s plenty,” I said. On the corner, in smaller script, I wrote: SIGNED, WILLA ROANE. The letters glowed brighter than any I’d written before. Not because they had more power. Because they were attached to a person I was choosing to be. Author. Not content. Not fuel. Not god. Just someone who had been given a pen in a very broken room and done her best not to make it worse.

But still, I wrote. This place… this world… it doesn’t offer safety to girls like me unless we become someone else. Do what we’re told and hope it’s enough to get through another day. And I don’t mean this competition. The pen scratched softly across the parchment, each stroke bleeding more of me than I meant to give. But I didn’t stop. Not when I thought of the way Damon had looked at Nora. Not when I imagined what his face would look like if he read this. I wrote until the candle’s light began to flicker low, until the fire behind my ribs softened to something steadier.
