I’m here to clean up your mess.” His hand went to his gun. Everything seemed to happen at once. Liam shoved me hard to the side. My shoulder hit the car door as a gunshot cracked through the night. I couldn’t tell who fired first—Liam or Neon—but the blast ripped the air apart.

His fingers tightened briefly at my elbow in unconscious reassurance before he pushed off. We jumped. For a heartbeat, gravity forgot us. We hit a neon street strip, feet slapping on flickering holo‑ads. Undead drones clawed out of the walls here, eyes glowing with static; Selene’s blade flashed behind us, shattering them before they fully formed. Sparks flew where her weapon hit empty space—system nodes, only she seemed able to see. She was hurting it. I was… irritating it. It was not the same thing. I landed hard enough that my knees jarred.

Blade threw another stone into the water, but this time it didn’t feel playful. His arm around me was tighter than before, like he was holding something fragile he was afraid to lose. “You remember when I told you I loved someone” Blade said slowly. “But she got claimed by someone more powerful than me?” I blinked. “Yes I remember.” My voice came out softer than I expected. Blade didn’t look at me immediately. He picked up a small stone, rolled it between his fingers, then threw it far into the lake.

A soft chuckle sounded beside me, and I didn’t even need to look to the side to know that it was coming from Blade. "Stop smiling like that," he whispered, “You know the whole world is watching, right?” I ignored him, I couldn’t even make out his words. "I've seen you prepare for war, and you looked less intense," he continued with a sigh, while turning to the elders for some help. But no one answered Blade. In fact, some of the elders actually chuckled, I heard all of them, but only barely. Because the closer Nyssa got to me, the more the world faded away.

It’s like it saturates my skin and sinks into me, making my body feel heavy, and my shoulders sag.
