Streetlights cast pale golden circles across the pavement, and beyond those small islands of light everything dissolved into shadow. No cars passed. No voices echoed. Just the distant sound of the city and the soft sound of my own footsteps. Normally, walking alone this late would have terrified me. My mother had practically drilled that fear into my bones growing up. Never walk alone at night. Never trust strangers. Never give men the chance to touch you. She’d always acted like the world was a minefield and I was the fragile idiot who’d step on something if she didn’t keep me on a tight leash.

It’s not safe to walk alone in the pack.” She explained and I nodded, suddenly feeling small.

Tonight's event was one of the most hated things to do for Alka. Walking alone in an abandoned building at night only made himself scared more than at noon. I walked like someone who had finally laid down a crushing burden that had been weighing her down. The streetlight stretched my shadow long—long enough that it almost reached the end of the road. I knew the road ahead was still very long, and it might feel lonely to walk it alone. There might be times of isolation, and I might even stumble. But no one would ever shove me down from behind ever again. And that was enough.

It was long enough to make me uneasy. "You're sure?" He added. "No." I sighed because I wasn't sure of anything. "That's the problem," I replied. Roman looked at me again. "You shouldn't walk home alone tonight," He stated. I almost laughed. He was being ridiculous. "I'll survive," I said with confidence. "You probably will." His answer surprised me. Most people would've argued. Roman didn't and instead he shrugged. "But that's not really the point." For some reason, that response stayed with me.

Armin's grip on the steering wheel tightened as they sped through the darkened streets. He glanced at Alysha, his jaw set with both anger and concern. “Never go somewhere alone again,” he said, his voice low and serious. “You have no idea how dangerous this city really is.”

I walked through the night trying my best not to be too scared of this whole situation, I don't like the dark, and I don't like walking alone, but I have to do it, it's my only solution to get away from this place, I'm a brave girl, I'm a fighter, I'm not scared of anything, I'm a strong independent fighter, I repeated to myself as I walked through the dark praying to god that no wolf would eat me and no vampire would drink my blood.
