The room fell silent again but not the familiar peaceful silence I bask with but the uncomfortable feeling that something might go wrong. I instantly waved the thoughts off, walking towards the mirror, my eyes resting on my reflection. "You have changed Jessica. But while she did pull back, she didn't say a word. Instead she stared into his dark eyes, at the fire there, the fire that matched the one raging inside her. My silly brother was still unaware that he had been made into a fool in these text messages. My phone suddenly rang. It was Shane. "Honey, did I accidentally leave my phone at home?" he asked while panting heavily. "Did you? I haven't noticed." It sounded like he exhaled in relief. "Why're you still awake? Be a good babe and go to sleep. Don't wait up for me." I was standing on the balcony as I continued to ask, "Where did you go for your jog?"

So, I did the only thing I could— I hung up. The phone slipped from my fingers, clattering to the ground, but I barely noticed. My body was already moving, my legs carrying me faster and faster, driven by some unknown force that I couldn’t control. I ran. The city streets blurred past me, the echoes of my footsteps mingling with the rapid beat of my heart as I sprinted toward home. Toward the one place where I might find answers or maybe, just maybe, some sense of peace. But deep down, I knew that peace was elusive, just like the life I had been trying to escape. And yet, I couldn't stop myself from running, even if I didn’t know what awaited me at the end.

"What do you actually want your life to look like?" He thought about it for half a block. "This," he said simply. "Louder." She squeezed his hand. "Then let's make it louder," she said. They walked home and the city moved around them and nothing was wrong tonight, and the reader knew something was coming because something was always coming, but right now nothing was wrong, and that was its own specific kind of tension.

That night, I ran. I didn’t wait for an escort. I didn’t wait for a safe house or a protective detail. I simply pushed through the station doors and let the city swallow me whole. Neon lights blurred into streaks. Shadows opened their arms. The alleys reeked of piss, rot, and broken promises. My shoes slapped the pavement, every echo a reminder that I was running with no place to hide. I couldn’t go back to The Boss’s shop. Not after hearing him speak of me like possession. Not after refusing his love that was no love at all.
