When Nicholas returned to the rental house where I had lived, he stared straight at the pile of newspapers on the ground. The dust all over seemed to be telling him how much time had passed here, and that no one had ever been here during that time. "Astrid... No, you wouldn't die..." His voice trembled as he slowly reached out and lifted a corner of the newspaper. A small, dried bloodstain appeared beneath it. "Ah!" Nicholas's legs gave way as he fell to the ground. He no longer dared to lift the remaining newspapers. He seemed to have stopped breathing as he stared blankly without any color on his face. What he had been afraid of and had always refused to believe had come true.

“Do they sleep outside your house? On the stairs? If I want ice cream at two in the morning, who turns on the lights?” Nicholas, for some reason, didn’t shut her down. Didn’t snap. “They sleep elsewhere,” he replied, completely unfazed. His voice was calm, unrushed. His hawk-like eyes flicked toward the little girl beside him like her presence didn’t surprise him. Like he was used to the chatter. Used to the chaos. Used to holding a tiny hand with a purple pacifier dangling from the wrist. “How many people live in this house?” “Enough.” “Are they all scared of you?”

My streets.” He stood, his presence terrifyingly calm. “And he’s walking through it like he owns it.”

I didn’t run away from two devils to let the third one catch me. “Scared now, little girl? Do you know what he does to little girls like you who love to kick men in the balls?” Nick asked me, the sadistic grin coming back on his face. And I shook my head, scared, terrified to even speak. “Please….” “He cuts their hands and feeds them to his pet— shark.” Nick said, and I suddenly felt nauseous. “Enough, Nick. Put her in the truck now.” Martin said, pressing the button on his key, making his truck beep loudly. Nick dragged me to the back of the truck harshly, as if I were a sack of potatoes or a wild camel.

"Could you be my future self?" This time, I get an answer at once. "Yes." It's quite brief. My mind goes blank. In the dead of night, I tiptoe to Nick's bedroom in the basement. As soon as I get to the door, a faint smell of blood strikes me. I tentatively knock on the door a few times but there is no response. I use my spare key to cautiously open the door. The shocking scene inside almost makes me scream. I hurriedly cover my mouth.
