The Rip
Only the showers hissed on, the room filling with a burn-cloud that hid everything but the smell—hot metal, chlorine, iron, steam.
Back in the gym, Rachel taped the last box shut and pressed her palms flat on it, grounding. The place felt done. Finished. Ready for kids and bad decisions.
Nick came back from the storeroom, flicked off the banks of lights. The horror posters turned into deeper shadows. “All done,” he said, and found her hand in the dark like he’d been doing it all his life.
They walked to the exit. Rachel hesitated at the hallway’s mouth, eyes tracing the gloom where the pool wing began.
