Perhaps Janet was in desperate need of blood and needed to burn through some fuel. The fact that no matter how far she travels, her thirst will never be quenched, is imperative for her. So she decided that the best she could do was just accept the fact that being human was a terrifying experience. Powerless and helpless. Eventually, after some time, Janet's thirst burns out, and they slowly navigate the dusk with only two flashlights while the earlier orange glow of the sunset has gone.
