But I believed him. In the third month of my tenure, the director called me into his office and said that due to the shortage of medical staff, they were short on personnel for the night shifts. He insisted that working night shifts was an essential experience if I wanted to become vice-director. I believed him and accepted without hesitation. That night, I finished my rounds around eleven o'clock and was passing by the break room when I heard something... unusual. It was a sound I knew well. But now, hearing it in the break room, my mind raced.

Eve spent the whole morning reading the book Axel gave her last night. She honestly felt silly when she realized that she actually slept after Axel left her room. Then she set aside her morning and afternoon to read the book like he said before going to work in the afternoon since she had the night shift. Unfortunately, her work was overwhelming, and she was glad not to bring her book to the hospital. She would work through the night and come home in the morning to pick up the book where she left off.

Now it’s this sad, faded thing, like it gave up on life. I dragged myself into the kitchen. Plates everywhere. My hands were already sore, but what choice did I have? The smell of fried food, alcohol, and burnt barbecue was glued to my clothes, my skin, even my hair. No matter how many showers I took, it stayed. That was the life of working night shifts at a greasy little diner. Outside, New York was doing what it always did—being loud. Honking, yelling, music blasting from cars, someone laughing too hard a street over. Past ten, the city wasn’t going to sleep anytime soon.

I slowly walked towards the hospital while trying to fight off my sleepiness, I couldn't let sleepiness win especially since I was transferred to the night shift. I could already see the tall hospital building and the people in the waiting area, the ambulance at the entrance to the ER, and the families crying and taking care of the paperwork for the morgue. "Yhra, is it your shift?" the guard at the table joked at me as I approached for my time card. "Yes, it's my first day on the night shift. It's all of a sudden," I replied then he checked my bag and gestured for me to be okay.

My hands were steady, but my mind was in chaos. The diner was quiet for a Tuesday. The neon 'OPEN' sign hummed. I wiped the same section of the counter over and over again, watching the rain start to smear across the front windows. Chicago at 2 AM is a graveyard for the lonely. It’s for the night-shift nurses, the cab drivers, and the people who have nowhere else to go. I was tired of being the girl who had nowhere to go. I looked at my reflection in the chrome of the milkshake machine.

Morning light slipped through the parted curtains, painting golden stripes across the rumpled sheets. Warmth kissed my bare skin, but it was the ache: the deep, satisfied throb in my thighs that woke me first. I shifted slowly, my legs heavy, as the sheets clung to my skin.
