Elora blinked, clutching her head as shards of memories flickered—hands tangled in dark hair, golden eyes blazing in moonlight, a kiss beneath a bleeding sky.
But the fragments slipped away like sand through her fingers.
“Joel?” she whispered again, softer this time.
But he was already turning, the shadows rising to claim him. His steps were heavy, each one ripping another piece of his heart.
Outside, the dawn broke over the forest, but Joel felt none of its warmth. He collapsed to his knees far from the ruins, alone. Forgotten.
