For a moment, he does not answer, and that silence is enough to make my stomach tighten, because I know that look, I know what it means when someone hesitates like that.
It means the truth is not something I am going to like.
Finally, he speaks.
“Someone close.”
My chest tightens again, sharper this time.
“Close to you,” I press.
His eyes darken slightly.
“Yes.”
The word feels heavier than it should.
Because there are not many people close to him.
And the ones who are… matter.
“Then say it,” I tell him, my voice steady even though something inside me is starting to twist.
