They can get here faster than father can,’ I let the small glimmer of hope flutter in my stomach… I just need to find a phone…

Until you’re tired of being in denial.”

Kyra muttered. Then a thought occurred to her. "Wait, are we on the northern lands?" she realized. He nodded bleakly. He is not very optimistic about their situation. If he calculated it correctly, they probably ran close to fifty miles farther away from home. There is nothing on this side. Just vast forest before it meets the nearest ocean. "Kaiser, what are those two thinking before they led us here?" Kyra asked with shock. The northern lands are so far away, that barely no one venture this far.

Unknown Number. This time there was no photograph. No video. No warning. Just a date. A location. And one sentence. “Ask your father what happened that night.”

“Anyhoo,” Dan continued, “I heard there’s a safe zone just a little ways further north. This… disease, or whatever it is, spreads like wildfire. Just before the news stations went out, I saw that all of the towns in the nearest fifty-mile radius are crawlin’ with the Prowlers. I dunno if the rest of the world even knows, if I’m bein’ honest. We’ve always been sorta remote out here, and well… You know how the folks ‘round here are. They rather take things into their own hands.”

I stare towards them, not quite following the conversation. “The folks that have been living here tried reaching out to some others like themselves but they haven’t had much luck in getting through to them. If they are too far away, it's likely their magic won’t reach them,” Elijah explains looking disheartened that the news of his safe heaven hasn’t reached as far as he had initially intended. “The Forgottens have magic too?” I muse, “Like witches and stuff?”

“I’m sorry, Leo. I haven’t heard from her either. She’s been kind of distant lately. Maybe she’s just focused on work? I don’t know.” The answers were always the same. No one knew where I was. No one knew anything. Leo could feel his frustration turning into something more potent—something darker. He had lost touch with the one person who had meant the most to him, and he had no idea how to fix it. There were no answers, no explanations. Just silence. And with that silence, a cold knot of realization settled in his chest. He didn’t know where Lila had gone. He didn’t know if she would ever reach out again. But he did know one thing.

But it felt like I was fading away. I noticed my body becoming transparent, and I could see the road to the afterlife, lined with flowers.
