“But I thought you deserved the courtesy of a farewell.” I pulled my knees closer to my chest and pressed my back into the wall. Every instinct screamed for Ruby, but the silence inside me was absolute. I’d never felt more alone in my life. Nora crouched slightly, just enough to meet my eye through the bars. “Did you really think no one would notice?” she asked. “That you could sneak your way to the throne like a rat?” “I didn’t—” My voice cracked, barely above a whisper. “Oh, you did,” she said, almost gently. “But I can’t blame you. It was a clever plan. Come in looking soft and fragile. Capture his attention. Hide your little affair until it’s too late.”

He had a rather calm composure compared to his brothers. I pulled out a random book. Born in Fire by Nora Roberts. A romance novel didn't sound bad. “Guess you will be keeping me company today, Nora.” I whispered, leaving the library with the book, and walked back to my room. I was barely on the tenth page of the book when my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I glanced at the screen and saw that it was a call from my therapist. A small smile tugged at my lips as I answered the call.

I pleaded, desperately peeling his hand off mine and swiftly walking away. As I hurriedly made my way towards the office I had been directed to, I couldn't shake off the nagging thought that if that guy was indeed a worker there, how could he afford such an extravagantly expensive car? Pushing the question aside, I made my way to the receptionist. "Hi I'm Nora Roberts, I was told to resume today" I said to the beautiful blonde lady who looked nice. She returned my smile and searched through some files as she spoke "Oh you're the new Personal Assistant to Mr Nathaniel Lockhart"

She seems nervous. I frown, "Okay, Mom." She opens the door to a room, and I'm speechless, it's not white, it's a deep maroon color. The room is bigger than Lacey's, and that's something I didn't think could be possible. There's a sofa in the corner and beside it is a small bookcase. Walking into the room, I walk over to the bookcase and run my fingers across the spines of the books that are there. Mom went all out. She bought books from my favorite authors. Nora Roberts, Harper Sloan, Carly Phillips, and of course E.L. James. I love the story of Christian and Ana, it's such a beautiful love story.

I said, because truth likes to have witnesses. Nora arrived in the kind of flurry that announces someone who has run across decades to hand you the next chapter. She was younger than I’d imagined and had the same observant tilt in her head I’d seen in Maggie’s handwriting. Her hands held an old ledger bound in thread so worn the fabric looked like a map of storms. She unwrapped it like it was a relic and slid it across the table with a reverence I found disarming.

Nora poked her head out of the door and looked around for a certain someone. As expected, she found Kristopher sitting on the couch, playing video games. The man was really crazy about video games. She walked over to him and placed a pile of books on the table. “Hey blondie, help me with my homework.” She ordered. “Are you talking to me?” Kristopher asked, without removing his eyes from the screen. Nora rolled her eyes. “Who else do you think is here beside us?” At that moment, the screen displayed a message.

“I can do this. It’s fine. A power boost to help make everything right. It’s okay.” Quickly, she reached out and grabbed hold of the ancient book. Nora clutched it to her chest and smiled. She turned to look at Winter and Roman. “I did it!” she exclaimed. “I totally did it!” “Awesome!” Winter said, smiling. “But wait. Somethings not right.” “What do you mean?” Nora asked. “The book isn’t glowing. Normally, when someone from the family touches it, the book glows.” Nora raised an eyebrow. “Maybe it’s broken?”

"Okay" Nora said as she nodded her head and went into her space,the first thing she grabbed was her laptop,her files that were in a case on the ground,Carl's Lego's, opening all her bags she took out everything that were in them even the money she had gotten from Dominco that she had tried to spend but haven't gotten the time and gathered them into one bag leaving the rest on the bed, searching around for what she could take,she kept moving around she wanted to take everything, "Nora! Are you done there let's get going,I've already called for our transport"

I couldn’t risk it. I sped out of my room and opened a window, breathing hardly. My blood cooled as seconds passed but my anger didn’t. I couldn’t lose Lexa. I had to make a move with her. Lexa’s POV I was almost done with the study room. I just had to dust the shelves of books. The shelves were reachable but there were about eight of them, lined up in the study room. I met Nora today. She told me that this wasn’t even the library and there were numerous books here. The only time I enjoyed reading was towards the end of middle school and at high school. Before then, I didn’t have need for reading.

Nora was scrolling and tapping on her phone, but I couldn't see what exactly she was doing. Their plan was to lure her back to her father's house with the promise of returning the property to her. There, they would torture her and kill her, then hide her body inside Nora's storage unit. It took everything in me not to throw up as I listened to a mother plan such evil against her own blood daughter, all for money. "After that, we'll kill Rob now that he already listed me as his beneficiary in his life insurance." My heart stopped palpitating for a second before it resumed pounding hard. How could Rob trust her to the point of including her in his life insurance?
