Enough food for twenty people even though it's just the three of us. Nora sits between Mira and me, her hair still damp from her shower, wearing one of her favorite pink sweaters. She looks more like herself now, though still too thin, still haunted around the eyes. She eats slowly, savoring each bite like she can't believe it's real. "Nora," I say after we've been eating for a while. "We need to talk about something." She looks up, wariness in her eyes. "Okay." Mira reaches over and takes her hand. "It's about Anthony. Your lecturer."

Chapter Thirteen Nora didn’t speak to anyone for two full days. She skipped lectures. She avoided her phone. She barely ate, and even when she did, the food tasted like ash. Her sketchbook, usually her sanctuary, remained closed, its pages mocking her silence. Her light the quiet glow that had always followed her flickered and dimmed.

"The doctor says his levels are up." Ashley looked at her for a long moment. "Nora — " "His levels are up, Ash." She sat down. She picked up the dinosaur book. She found the page Liam had been on. "That's what matters." Ashley said nothing. In the corridor outside, Nora heard nothing. No voices, no footsteps coming this way. After a few minutes she heard the main entrance doors. She did not look up from the book.

I did not say anything during the entire thing and just watched her quietly as she put on her show. I wanted to know just how sincere she was during our seven years of friendship. By the looks of it, I was too naive and mistook this venomous viper for a harmless pet. That was why I ended up dying so tragically in the previous cycle. “That’s fine. If you can’t help me, someone else will.” I did not stop smiling and dialed a number. The moment the call went through, the person on the other end asked anxiously, “Miss Nelson, have you managed to contact Joy?”

Settling on making a quick omelet, I gathered eggs, cheese, and some leftover vegetables. As I whisked the eggs, my mind wandered back to the past couple of days. I wondered if Grace was asleep right now, or sitting up feeling scared and lonely. Tomorrow, I would prepare a meal for her, I decided. And maybe bring her a few of those books I had purchased. “Midnight snack, Kayla?” I jumped at the sound of the voice, nearly dropping the bowl. Turning, I saw Nora leaning casually against the doorway, her arms crossed and a smug smile playing on her lips. She was dressed impeccably, as always, in a silk robe that accentuated her slim figure.

Indigo replied in a trembling tone. "Then," Nora lifted her gaze and looked at the orchid through the bridge of her nostrils. She walked, crushing the saplings under her feet. The chill of the little blossoms tickled her feet. She looked at the orchid with flaring eyes and smirked, "Time to feed my fires."

I stood in the middle of the living room, facing the security camera's blinking red light, practicing my smile again and again. Looking into the lens, I spoke softly, like I was leaving a message for the Mom who'd watch it someday. "Mom, look. I practiced the perfect smile again today. "Lift the corners of my mouth fifteen degrees and show eight teeth. The books say that's the most sincere smile. The one that makes people feel warm. "I've practiced so much my face hurts... but that's okay. "When you watch this tomorrow... will you tell me I did a good job? "Will you finally believe I wasn't lying to you?"

NORA Nora's phone rings interjecting the music being played on her phone, with high hopes that the caller would be Spence, she applies her lipstick and rushes to the phone to pick it up before it trails off "hello" she speaks seductively, "Hi Grace.." the voice from the phone replies, Nora looks at the screen of her phone confused "this is not Grace, you must have dialed a wrong number" "No, it's not a wrong number... Grace, Why have you been avoiding my calls? I recognize your voice anywhere I hear it, this is Alfred" the voice added before Nora could cut him off
