Those books introduce the core Tortall vibe — coming-of-age, gender-bending sword play, and Alanna’s stubborn heart.

From there I’d slide into 'The Immortals' quartet: 'Wild Magic', 'Wolf-Speaker', 'Emperor Mage', and 'The Realms of the Gods'. They shift tone toward nature and animal magic with Daine and also start to deepen the world. After that, read the 'Protector of the Small' quartet — 'First Test', 'Page', 'Squire', 'Lady Knight' — which is a more grounded, training-to-knighthood arc that benefits from the emotional scaffolding Pierce builds earlier.

Chronological order is a messy way into her books, honestly. The internal history is all over the place. If you care about story publication and character arcs more than a fictional timeline, you'd be way better off following publication order by series. Starting with 'Song of the Lioness' just makes sense—it’s where Pierce found her voice, and everything else builds off that foundation.

Trying to read strictly by in-world events means you'd begin with the Beka Cooper books, set centuries earlier. But those are written with the assumption you already know the magic system and the country of Tortall. You miss the 'aha' moments of seeing the origins of things mentioned in the earlier-published books. The 'Circle of Magic' books are a whole other continent and mostly standalone, but even there, reading 'The Circle Opens' quartet before the first 'Circle of Magic' books would spoil character growth. My take? Publication order within each sub-series, and maybe save the ancient-history Beka books for after you’re already invested in the kingdom.
